Get a Life!
(Free, with great career!)

Overview: Network administration and network engineering are great careers. The salaries are excellent and you are paid to play with high tech toys. How cool is that? So, while your friends are flipping burgers or doing phone sales, you can reap the benefits of a great career. As the lead instructor for Pierce's Cisco Academy Program, I will help you learn the technologies that make businesses (and you) successful. Here are some of the courses that are part of our Networking certificate, Associate's degree, and our Routing Certificate.
I do not teach all of these courses every semester, but here they are with indications of when they are usually taught (Note, beginning in the Fall of 2017, the scheduling for these courses is changing.  Do NOT rely on past scheduling patterns to plan your courses)
  • Routing Technology Certificate - And required if you are working towards your Associate's Degree in Cloud/Networking/Security
    • CIS 210 (formerly CS 587) - Cisco CCNA 1 - Intro to Networks
    • CIS 224 (formerly CS 578) - Cisco CCNA 2 - Switching, Routing, and Wireless Essentials (SRWE)
    • CIS 225 (formerly CS 537) - Cisco CCNA 3 - Enterprise Networking, Security, & Automation (ENSA)
    • Note:  CIS 240 is a combination of CIS 224 and CIS 225
Degrees and Certifications: You can find out which courses are required for an AS degree in Computer and Network Technology, and our certificates in Network Technology and Routing Technology
How you'll learn:There are almost no jobs in networking for "Professional Test Taker."As a result, I place a lot of emphasis on what you DO and how you THINK.You will earn good grades by getting your labs done on time and engaging in real-world scenarios created in our labs and with our virtualization tools!
  • You'll actually configure networks that work!
  • You'll work in teams, as people do in the "real world."
  • You'll use technology as a tool to enhance your learning
  • You'll combine traditional learning with online learning
  • You'll challenge the traditional ways you learn and create learning strategies that work best for you
  • Students in all five courses above will have access to the Cisco Networking Academy course content and Packet Tracer simulation tool for FREE!

About me: Ooooooh, I get to talk about me! Wowzers. I built my first network in 1988 and have worked with networks ranging in size from 4 users (yeah, that first one) to thousands of users. I've also been a working consultant and trainer in the computer industry since 1987. I've taught network equipment design engineers how to test routers and switches that could handle traffic rates of terabits per second, including engineers at Cisco, Verizon, Juniper, Extreme, Nortel, and Alcatel, and more. I promise to bring that real-world experience into your classes. Additionally, I was an "Honor Roll" Instructor at UCLA Extension from 1999 until 2007 when I joined Pierce. I am also licensed by the California Department of Real Estate (# 02042398).  If you have questions about my real estate practice, please DO NOT use my Pierce or LACCD email addresses.  Instead, please use dave@schamus.com  My personal goal is to teach real estate courses at Pierce. I look forward to helping you learn networking technologies.

OK, so what about fun? Seriously, hanging out with routers, switches, and servers DOES NOT QUALIFY. So, in my "ample?" spare time, I play guitar and bass in a couple of bands. I also love digital photography. Most importantly, I love to spend time with my wife, who has been incredibly supportive of my music and photography.
